Product Owner and Business Analyst roles are crucial in the information technology (IT) sector. Especially product owners, who have become an indispensable part of Scrum teams with the adoption of Agile Methodology, serve as leaders and strategists in the project development process.
As the term ‘Product Owner’ may sound abstract to many, even people working in software might not fully grasp the scope of this role. So, it’s beneficial to provide a brief definition of this term before delving into the similarities and differences between it and the business analyst role.
A Product Owner is responsible for possessing a deep understanding of the project, the industry, and the market dynamics. Through this knowledge, they strategically make decisions to maximize the product’s value.
On the other hand, a business analyst determines the requirements for the development of the project, prepares workflows and diagrams, and makes technical analysis and design. Even though a business analyst may have more technical knowledge than a product owner, the responsibility of owning the product lies solely with the product owner.

Similarities Between Product Ownership and Business Analysis
Tasks like product deployment, backlog creation, and management, initiation of acceptance tests, collaborating with team members to gather tasks (story gathering), documenting tasks (story writing), and guiding the product alongside new team members are shared responsibilities for both roles. However, it’s important to note that these roles differ.
Product Owner vs. Business Analyst – Main Differences
- One of the main differences between product owners and business analysts is that product owners focus on customer-related aspects of a product while business analysts focus on developing the technical aspects of the project itself. A product owner is responsible for understanding customer needs and managing the product in a customer-oriented manner.
- The Product Owner determines the product vision and priorities and guides the software team toward achieving those goals. Business analysts conduct analyses to understand business requirements and processes.
- A product owner is responsible for developing the product vision through market research. On the other hand, a business analyst focuses more on the product requirements. This includes modeling business rules, working on implementations and tests with stakeholders to determine goals and outcomes, and anticipating the results of the project.
