HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure)

HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) is a protocol that ensures secure data transmission over the Internet. HTTPS is a secure version of the HTTP protocol and ensures that data is transmitted in an encrypted form. HTTPS is primarily used to secure communication between websites and users.

Key Features of HTTPS:

  • Encryption: HTTPS encrypts transmitted data to prevent unauthorized access to it. This encryption is typically provided through SSL/TLS protocols.
  • Authentication: HTTPS uses digital certificates to verify the identity of a website. This prevents users from interacting with fraudulent websites.
  • Data Integrity: HTTPS guarantees that no modifications are made to the data during transmission, ensuring that the sent data reaches the recipient accurately.

HTTPS is especially used when transmitting sensitive information such as personal details, credit card information, or login credentials. Additionally, search engines like Google prefer websites that use HTTPS and rank them higher for security reasons.

When a website uses HTTPS, you will typically see “https://” in the browser’s address bar along with a green padlock symbol. This indicates that the connection is secure and encrypted.
